Bangladesh RMG sector focuses more on man-made fibers to increase market share

Learn how Master Apparels is contributing to this shift

The Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector in Bangladesh has long been the backbone of the country’s economy and has emerged as the second largest exporter in the textile world. Although known for its dominance in cotton-based products, the sector is now focusing more on manufacturing man-made fibers (MMF) garments to increase its global market share while maintaining the current growth. The reason behind this  move is not only for the rising demand of clothing made from man-made fibers (MMF) but also a strategic move to diversify its products and move up the value chain as the sector prepares for the post-LDC graduation scenario.

In this article, we will see the influences behind this transition, the challenges and opportunities it presents. Besides, learn how Master Apparels is contributing to this shift.

Influences behind the shift towards manufacturing Man-Made Fibers garments

  • Changing Global Fashion Trends

The global demand for man-made fiber (MMF) garments is increasing. Due to the massive changes in lifestyle, attitude and eco-consciousness, consumers are increasingly favoring the non-cotton garments such as nylon, polyester, viscose etc. Because high-tech fibers offer several advantages over traditional cotton including easy-caring, affordability, durability, sustainability etc. Additionally, the rise of smart textiles and cross functional clothing (i.e. Athleisure) has made recycled man-made fiber particularly attractive.

  • Economic Benefits

Man-made fibers offer cost advantages both for the garments manufacturers and consumers. Man-made fibers are usually cheaper than cotton or natural fibers. Unlike cotton, the production cost of these artificial fibers is less dependent on agricultural condition and market demand fluctuations. So, the price remains stable all the year. This stability allows manufacturers to plan better and maintain consistent pricing strategies. On the other hand, the dyeing and coloring charge is affordable compared to natural fibers. Since the Manmade fiber garments need not to do iron. Thus save laundry costs of the users.

  • Technological Advancements

Recent technological advancements have enhanced the man-made fibers properties so that these could offer the look and feel like that of natural fibers while providing superior performance characteristics.

Challenges in Adopting Man-Made Fibers

Despite the benefits, transitioning to man-made fibers poses several challenges for the Bangladesh RMG sector:

  • Infrastructure Upgradation:

As existing infrastructures predominantly set up for cotton, it requires to be upgraded and replaced to shift in MMFs based industry. For this, needs a large investment in new machinery and technology. According to Bangladesh government the industry needs to invest $25-30 billion to develop a strong backward linkage. On the other hand, the sector needs some policy support such as low-cost loans, incentive on MMFs product exports, duty-free facility etc.

  • Skill Development:

Handling and working process of the Man-made fibers are somewhat different in many ways than that of cotton fibers. For a simple example, Man-made fiber fabrics are comparatively difficult to sew. Seams do not hold tight as in natural fibers fabrics. Therefore, the workforce needs extensive  training and required knowledge to understand the properties of the new materials and technologies to cope with the new production processing and finishing.

  • Supply Chain Adjustments:

Our garment sector is largely dependent on imported Man-made fibers fabrics. To support the ready-made garments industry in elevating to MMFs based production, our backward linkage industries also need to develop and expand accordingly. It involves upgrading the supply chain and suppliers based to source new raw materials and to make sure the steady flow of fabrics production.

Opportunities for Growth

Despite these challenges, the move towards man-made fibers presents numerous opportunities:

  • Market Expansion:

Expanding to man-made fibers production, Bangladesh’s readymade garment sector, could diversify its products  and move up the value chain. In a recent study, it shows that if Bangladesh produces and exports high-value-added MMF products right now, we can increase our total export by around 25% in value. More over Bangladesh has the potential to grab a 12% stake in the global man-made fibre-based apparel market that will reach $375 billion by 2030.

  • Sustainability Initiatives:

Sustainable fashion is the future. Brands and consumers shift towards eco-conscious and responsible practices. Embracing recycled man-made fibers can position Bangladesh as a leader in sustainable fashion.

  • Innovation and Differentiation:

The scope of produce innovative fabric blends and specialized apparel is much higher in man-made fibers. Bangladesh’s could grab the opportunity to differentiate it’s offerings in the competitive global market. This can lead to higher value-added products and better profit margins.
